DAY 5
- Ticaboo to Chinle
|

Snow
and ice - nothing ! Out of the motel by 8 to catch the 9am ferry from Bullfrog to Halls
Crossing. At the ferry port (a dirt track that stopped at the water's
edge) we gathered another crowd round the bikes. Having passed 4 gas stations in the last 12 miles, this route has no lack of fuel. Past natural bridges national park then south towards Mexican Hat. On the way the road meets a 1000ft cliff which it descends in a series of switchbacks. The road down the cliff is dirt and gravel, which is fun on a motorbike. After a quick detour to the goosenecks of the San Juan we hit Mexican Hat for lunch (or breakfast or something, given that this is the first meal since lunch yesterday). Down to monument valley. A stunning piece of desert that you should
visit. After Kayenta we run with the wind at our backs. No wind in our faces till we're over 55 so running at 80 doesn't feel strange. Turning south towards Chinle we get the wind in our faces again. By the time we reach a motel at Chinle I ache. My neck - from the wind. My hands and shoulders from holding the bike in a straight line. My eyes from the sand. But we managed to miss the rain. 808 miles total - 232 miles today. |
