Day 12

Sandstorm - nothing.
Blizzard, 20 ft visibility (once I was able to wipe the snow off my glasses) on a dirt track coz they were rebuilding the road - that's something!

I hate to think what could happen next.
Earthquake perhaps, or forest fire.

Breakfast at the hotel before checking out the Canyon de Chelly.
We drove the south rim and stopped at all the overlooks. On the way to the last one, there were two wild horses on the road. They didn't seem to mind us too much and stayed on the right as we slowly overtook them.
The valley looks stunning and I can understand why the Navajo keep it to themselves.

From there to the Grand Canyon the road goes through the Hopi reservation. This reservation is completely surrounded by the Navajo Nation but they are a very separate and private people. Photography is banned and tourists are not encouraged.
The down side of this is a lack of gas stations.

Tuba city is 155 miles from Chinle but these bikes have a range of about 100 miles. From the V-Rod e-group I know that when the reserve light comes on at 40 miles to go, you actually have about 20 miles of fuel. My reserve light came on in the middle of the desert, 46 miles from Tuba City. We throttled back to 40mph and prayed. When I pulled into the gas station my gauge was at 1/8 (Paul was on empty). I don't know how big the tank is but I could only fit 3.1 gallons in (and I filled it to the brim).

Unfortunately by the time we reached Tuba City I was in so much pain that I had to get Paul to put the side stand down !

We sat out a rain storm in the Taco Bell before heading towards the Grand Canyon.

At the first Grand Canyon overlook we stopped but the view was obscured by the approaching big black cloud.
The snow started before we left the car park.
The first few miles of road was dirt as they rebuilt it. After a couple of miles I had to stop to wipe the snow off my glasses. After that I got used to wiping them on the move, which for a time I had to do constantly.
We stopped a couple of times and at one stop, someone took a photograph of us covered, head to foot, in snow. This was at about 6pm on the 18th April 2003. If you know who took the photograph I would love to have a copy. Our cameras were packed away in waterproof safety.
25 miles in the snow to Tusayan where the hotels are.
Hotel one - "Sorry we're full"
Hotel two - "No rooms here"
Hotel three - "One room free, but it's smoking" - "I'll take it"

This is the strangest and most varied holiday I've ever had.
I could live with a little less variety

1091 miles total - 283 miles today.
